Problems and Strengths in RMG sector of Bangladesh
Bangladesh, constitutionally known as "People's Republic of Bangladesh", is a developing country of South Asia which is largely dependent on its Ready Made Garment Industry. Nowadays other countries recognize us by our RMG industry.
Globally we are at the third position in this industry. There are some positive sides that we are using at our benefit and increasing the production rate as well as spreading the market all over the world. These strength sides are discussed below:
Globally we are at the third position in this industry. There are some positive sides that we are using at our benefit and increasing the production rate as well as spreading the market all over the world. These strength sides are discussed below:
- We have a large population of over 16 crore which avails us with a cheap labour market.
- We can get raw materials at a cheap price.
- Diversity and policy support.
- Capacity and entrepreneurial spirit.
- International standard quality control process.
- 30 years experience in garments manufacturing.
- Quick learning and dedicated workforce at competitive cost.
- Rapidly moving toward the higher end of the market.
- Adoption of environment friendly and green concepts.
- Financial and bank support.
There are many problems as well which are pulling us downwards whenever we are trying to evolve more. These problems are discussed below:
- Low wage and irregular payment.
- Forceful overtime and autocratic approach.
- Poor working condition.
- Physical and sexual harassment.
- Accidents and deaths because of safety and security failures.
- Lack of marketing tactics and variations.
- Undeveloped backward linkage industry.
- Labour unrest or strike.
- Political instability.
- Lack of training centers.
Keeping all these problems in mind still we can say that our Ready Made Garment industry is emerging day by day. All we have to do is that we have to support it, make its way smoother, identify those who are the culprits that motivates the workers to strike, improve wages and working conditions and so on. Government should pass strict rules so that owners of the garments cannot violate those and workers get their expected facilities. New markets should be thought and marketing management should work hard on it. Thus we would be able to compete with country like China in this industry.
